This list includes the books I am reading for comprehensive exams for my Ph.D. in twentieth-century U.S. history at Ohio University. I focus on cultural, intellectual, social, and political history, especially music and film history. Since these fields overlap with each other, I have organized the list into thematic and chronological categories for (hopefully) better reading comprehension, although the groupings are rough. Primary sources are mixed in with secondary ones, and most of the books are by American authors, except when a European intellectual’s influence must be addressed in an American context. Essentially, this list should broadly cover the history of ideas, music, film, art, politics, and social movements within the U.S. during the twentieth century.
